Burrton Students Celebrate $1,000 Popcorn Victory

BURRTON—Kindergarten through fifth grade students were treated to a celebration last Wednesday. High school FACS students set up a scavenger hunt, an obstacle course and a photo booth for the younger students, who also got to dance, have their faces painted, snack on treats and do some painting, both with hands and brushes.

The party was originally scheduled outside, but a cold snap postponed the event. It was rescheduled to Wednesday, when rain changed the plans to an indoor celebration. The celebration looked like organized chaos, but there were a lot of smiles and laughter, from both the young students and their high school counterparts.

The celebration was because these elementary students were part of the Popcorn Pep Club Challenge that ended with Burrton High taking second place nationally.

Students in Dana Kreie’s Family and Consumer Science classroom started working on the project last fall. Kreie found the contest and asked her FACS students if they wanted to give it a try. First place in the national contest would be awarded $2,500 and second place would receive $1,000.

The students put together a program using the Wizard of Oz theme. Contest rules stated the high school students must teach younger kids all about popcorn.  The FACS class tailored their instruction to the different age levels.THE obstacle course started with human bowling.THE obstacle course started with human bowling.

Younger students learned how popcorn grew and what makes it pop. The play math games, made treats and even helped create the popcorn diorama that would be submitted in the contest.

The high school students had to present the diorama and videos showing teaching moments and activities at their school as part of the contest. Everything had to be completed and turned in by Dec. 31 of last year. And then the wait began.

For more than a month, Kreie checked the website almost daily to see if winners had been chosen yet. She received the notification on Feb. 6 that Burrton had taken second place in the national contest. The school was awarded $1,000 in prize money.

Kreie said she discussed the monetary award with her students. “They wanted to take part of the money and do something with the younger kids, because they helped us put it all together,” Kreie said.
